FROM THE PRESIDENT Marylee Dichiaro

Hello Spring! Good-bye school year! Can you believe it is almost over? I can’t believe that three years ago we came to NCP and it will be another three years before we return (Karen-look for Zeke in 2006)! I can’t find the words to express my gratitude for the job done by our teachers. Shirley, I have had so much fun working with you the past two years. You love what you do and it shows. I admire your dedication, love and tremendous patience you have for our children and this program. Karen, your reviews are glowing! Like I said, 2006, baby! To all the families, thank you for your commitment, it was truly appreciated.

Our end of the year meeting will be held at The Blue Crab Grill on May 2oth at 6:00pm.  The Blue Crab Grill is located in the Suburban Plaza on Elkton Road in Newark.

FROM THE 4’s- Shirley Glines 738-9512

In May the 4’s will complete a unit on pedestrian safety and Community Helpers.  This will include crossing the street safely, which is with an older person for 4 year olds.  We will continue counting, doing rhyming words, opposites and number recognition.  Karen and I have enjoyed our sixth school year here at NewArk UCC.  We have seen lots of growth and maturing in the children.  Over the summer continue to encourage your child to complete tasks on his or her own.  Read, read, and read some more to your children.  I will miss my wonderful 4’s.  It is always difficult for me to say farewell.  The best advice I can give each of you is to stay involved in your child’s schools over the years.  Have a wonderful summer!  Thank you for being part of the NCP family.  I am looking forward to working with our 3’s who are “moving up” and our new 4’s in September.

FROM THE 3’s- Karen Peterson 322-5340

It’s already May!  I was looking back at the first day of school pictures and was amazed by how much the children have grown since then.

In May, we will talk about community helpers, Mother’s Day and even Father’s Day.

As we wind up the year, I will be spending time with each child individually so that I can give you an accurate assessment during our conferences.

Thank you to all the drivers and helpers for our field trip to Pathmark. I think everyone had a good time and learned a lot.

I would like to thank you for sharing your children with me this year.  As my second class, your children will always have a special place in my heart!

Have a safe and happy summer.

END OF SCHOOL YEAR PICNICS

The end of the school year picnics will be in our play area.  Parents and siblings are invited to join the fun.  Preschool will provide lunch for the preschool children and scheduled helping parents.  All others need to bring a brown bag lunch, beverage and lawn chairs.  School hours will be 9:30am – 11:30am and 12:30pm – 2:30pm.  Helping parents need to report 15 minutes early.  Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the picnic.  We will have vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, cool-whip and strawberries to put on top.  All of the 4’s with summer birthdays will hear the happy birthday song sung just for them.

SUMMER PROJECTS

There are several outside projects that I need completing this summer.  The picnic tables, benches at the black tunnel and the wood deck and climber need to be waterproofed.  The steps up the deck need to be revised so “little legs” can more safely walk up and down. The sandbox lid needs to be painted. Preschool will pay for supplies needed.  Please call Shirley, 738-9512, if you are willing to help.  You can do these projects at your own pace as long as they are complete by September.

Read Aloud Corner - Books on Tape

By Valerie Stenner  (Former newsletter coordinator for NCP)

Books on Tape can be a great help while running a list of errands, on rainy days or on those long car and plane rides to your vacation destination this summer.  Books are available in several formats…abridged or unabridged; read by a single reader or performed by a whole ensemble; recordings of the first halves of books which are intended to encourage the reluctant reader to finish reading the book on his/her own.  Remember how your preschooler wanted to hear the same story over and over and over?  I’m sure there are plenty of books which you have read to your children or books that they have read on their own which they would love to experience again! You’re best source for these gems are public libraries where you can borrow them free of charge!  Books on tape can also be purchased through The Learning Station, bookstores, or catalogs (Listening Library - 1-800-243-4504, and Chinaberry Press - 1-800-776-2242).  Books on Tape (www.booksontape.com, 1-800-521-7925)offers a rental program as well as new and used sales.

Many award winning books and series of books can be found on tape.  The Search for Delicious by Natalie Babbitt was the first children’s novel we listened to on tape…and we have since listened and enjoyed it several more times.  It was produced with a group of readers who read one or more of the characters’ parts in the story (Hey, it’s a theatre production for your ears!).  The Indian in the Cupboard Series by Lynne Reid Banks is one of my family’s favorites.  The author’s British accent and enjoyment in reading the stories she wrote made the tapes more enjoyable than the printed versions of the books.  Other books on tape which we have enjoyed (most of them repeatedly) include:

Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary              The Chocolate Touch by Roald Dahl               Cheaper By the Dozen

Chocolate Fever by Robert K. Smith                Walk Two Moons - Sharon Creech                  The Cay by Theodore Taylor

The Galliant Pig –Dick King-Smith                    Red Bird –Sharon Creech                                   Frindle by Andrew Clements

A Year Down Yonder –Richard Peck                Harry Potter Series –J.K. Rowling                     A Dog Called Kitty by Bill Wallace

A Long Way from Chicago –Richard Peck         Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede    The Search for Delicious –Natalie                                                                                                                                     Babbitt
