FROM THE EDUCATIONAL DIRECTOR Shirley Glines 738-9512

  • Helping parents need to report at 8:45 A.M., 12:15 P.M.
  • School begins at 9:00 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. Children should not be brought into the classroom until the starting time. The teachers need the time prior to start-up to give directions to the helping parents. If you arrive earlier than the starting time, please wait in your car and watch for the classroom curtain to open.
  • At 9:00 and 12:30 bring your child into the classroom. Have him/her hang up their jacket and place their book bag in their cubby. Say goodbye at the door. If you need to stay, please enter the class area and get involved with the daily routine.
  • At visitations each child will be given a dinosaur to decorate and bring back to school their first day. The dinosaurs will be posted on a wall in the classroom. Children love to see their creations on display.
  • Each child should bring a change of clothes in the book bag in case of a bathroom accident, juice or paint spill.
  • If you need to leave a message for the teacher during class, call 368-0178. Messages will be checked prior to going outside at 11:00 and 2:30.
  • Dismissal will usually be done from the outside play area, weather permitting. Go to the picnic tables by the sandbox and get your child’s book bag. The teacher will collect your child from the play area. In bad weather, come into the classroom to get your child. The teacher will dismiss one child at a time. Never leave without the teacher knowing you have your child.
  • Each class must have two helping parents. Please be prepared to stay on you scheduled days.
  • Be positive in your approach with the children. Encourage taking turns, sit at the child’s level and have fun. Interact with all the children, not just your own.
  • Encourage independence in all of the children.
  • Potty breaks will be built into the daily routine of the 3’s for as long as necessary
  • If you need preschool copies, please ask Shirley or Karen to make them for you. Since we share the copy machine with the church office, we want to limit the number of people handling the machine.
  • We need two photos of your child for use in the classroom for the 4’s, one for the 3’s.
  • We have openings in the 4 P.M. class, please tell family and friends about our program.

FROM THE PRESIDENT- Diane Roberts 366-1148; sdsroberts@aol.com

Hello and welcome to the 2001-2002 school year. I am excited about returning as Preschool President! This time of year is really stressful for parents and children, especially if you have a child entering the program and it is their first school experience. The following are tips to parents who may be a little apprehensive about leaving their screaming child behind.

    1. Don’t linger. Drop your child off, help him/her find his coat rack and cubby. Give a kiss or hug good-bye and leave.
    2. Talk to your child before school and let him/her know that it is a safe and fun place to be.
    3. Let your child know that all his/her friends are at school and would like to see him/her.

These simple tips will help your child and you adjust to the schedule and adapt to his/her new surroundings.

Please remember that without you we wouldn’t have this great opportunity to be involved in your child’s education. As a helping parent you will see your child grow and learn. You will know first hand that your child is experiencing a fantastic well planned program that has been mastered for many years.

I look forward to our monthly meeting, they are scheduled for the third Tuesday of every month @ 7 P.M. (unless otherwise noted). We need your attendance in order for you (the parents) to be updated and knowledgeable of the schools activities. We also do all our voting and decisio0n making at these meetings so please plan on attending.

If I can answer any questions or you need to contact me please call or e-mail me any time.

FROM THE 4’s- Shirley Glines 738-9512; shglines@aol.com

I am happy to welcome you to the 2001-02 school year. I am happy to have Karen Peterson join the NCP family as our 3’s teacher. Karen loves the co-operative spirit of our program and has a special way with children. Please welcome her. The classroom and outside play area are ready for the joyful sounds of children having fun. This is my 12th year as Educational Director and my 17th year as the 4’s teacher. My husband is a retired teacher from the Christina School District. We have two grown children and a grandson who is two years old. My niece, Amanda Gerhart is a student in my morning class.

I truly appreciate the trust you have in our program. My goals are to challenge the children to be cooperative with their peers, with the helping parents and with me and to enjoy being in an educational setting. Most of all I will stress having fun! I am anxious for our classroom to be full of children and for all of us to be working together to provide a stimulating learning environment for them. Have a wonderful year. Please call or e-mail me with concerns.

Thanks to the many New Ark United Church of Christ members who have been actively supportive and most welcoming. Debbie Miklos, Lynne Robinson (better known as Miss. Lynne), and Rev. Peter Wells. Thanks to you all! We are grateful for your support.

FROM THE 3’s- Karen Peterson- 322-5340

For many of our 3’s, this will be the first experience of their school career. It can be a very exciting time, and may be a little scary. I can empathize, as this is my first year at Newark Cooperative Preschool. My goal is to make the transition to school life fun and easy.

To make the transition easier, we will start with an initial visit on September 6th, where the child stays with the parent(s) and meets a few of his/her classmates. Then half the class will come to school for a shortened school day on Tuesday, September 11th, and the other half will come on Thursday, September 13th. By the time the whole class meets on Tuesday, September 18th, your child should feel comfortable in the room, recognize me and some new friends.

I am a firm believer in the cooperative aspect of our school. Parents are always welcome in my classroom, and if your child has trouble separating, you are invited to stay (sorry, no siblings), roll up your sleeves, and have fun with us, too!

TUITION COORDINATOR – Melissa Miller (Michael A.M. 4’s)

Tuition is due on the first of each month. The school works on a strict budget so please pay on time. Tuition may be placed in the white box located on top of the cubbies, and needs to be in by 3 P.M. on the 7th of the month or it will be considered late and a late fee of $10.00 will be charged. If a check is mailed to the preschool it needs to be postmarked by the 7th. Any check returned to the treasurer for any reason will be assessed a $25.00 fee plus the $10.00 late fee.

Tuition Scholarships of $20.00 per month are available. The need is based on the Federal Government Free Lunch Guidelines (if your child would qualify for free lunch, you would qualify for a scholarship). All financial information is confidential. Call the Treasurer, Patti Mooney at 836-0273, for the forms. Tuition is 3’s $65.00/ 4’s $75.00 per month.

SIGN UP TO CLEAN THE CLASSROOM

Each family is required to clean the classroom one Friday, at the mid-year clean-up or at the end-of-the-year clean-up. A reminder note with instructions will be placed in your child’s cubby early in the week you are scheduled. It is your responsibility to pick up the keys on Thursday (3’s) or Friday (4’s) before your scheduled date. The Church requests that the cleaning be completed on Friday. You may start at 4:00 P.M. The keys are located on the Helping Parent Information Board located in the teacher area in the far cornier of the room. Call Michelle Romeo (Emma 4A.M.) with questions-369-9063.

SAVE TRASH

Many items you might throw away are useful in the classroom. Please save clean yogurt and one pound coffee cans with lids, green plastic fruit baskets, plastic caps from liquid laundry detergent, and plastic cups from prepared jello and pudding.

RECYCLE

We will recycle our glass/plastic juice bottles again this year. We WILL NOT be recycling aluminum cans this school year due to storage limitations. New Ark United Church of Christ does recycling, cans are collected the first Sunday of each month.
