A word from Shirley Glines (our 4’s teacher)

The fours are off to a great start. They are busy making friends with each other. Each week we see the comfort levels rising. We are having a great time. Please let us know what your child is saying about school. This is important feedback for the early days of school.

The fours first field trip will be this month. We will be visiting the Ashland Nature Center. We will look at Fall plants, especially looking for seeds. Volunteer drivers will be needed, about five for the class. Please note the revised schedule listed in the upcoming events. Special thanks to Joe Cutter and Colette Matsanka (Missy 4’s a.m.) for helping me get the school year off to a great start. As you probably know by now my daughter has been having health problems following the birth of my grandson. I have taken a leave of absence and Joe will be teaching the 4’s class. I hope to be back with the children by the first of October.

The fours will be having a special activity throughout the school year called “Star of the Week”. The Star will be:

· Line leader with Mrs. Glines
· Take a star bag home for the week
· Will dictate a story about being a star
· And will make a special picture sharing special information about himself/herself

On Monday the star will bring a book for me to read to the class. New this year, is a star bag for the each class for the star to take home on Monday. On Wednesday the star will make an “I Am Special” picture in school to share with the class. On Friday the stars return the bag and bring show and tell for the group time. Your child will bring home a “star” note when it is their week to be star, also his/her picture will be on display on the star bulletin board. Our first week will be November 1st.

Special thanks to our VP of Admissions Suzanne Mack (Eric 3’s p.m.) for taking care of numerous phone calls and registrations; Michelle Romeo (Kayla 4’s a.m.) for gathering and organizing health forms.

A word from Joe Cutter (our 3’s teacher)

Happy October! I hope both parents and children are feeling like the year is falling into a routine. I know your child is working hard to get used to the rhythm of the school year. He or she should be starting to anticipate the day’s schedule at school. If your child is still a little anxious about letting you walk out the door of the classroom, you may want to remind him or her about the daily routine (it’s in your handbook), concluding with “and then I will pick you up from school”.

I am looking forward to pet visits early in October. I’ve already heard about some of the furry and funny members of your families. Also keep an eye on the parent notice board in the classroom for information about Halloween. You will NOT be bringing costumes in from home. We will make our own fabulous creations here at school.

It has been a treat to work with the 4’s this fall. I’m sorry if the situation has been confusing for anyone, but we thought this was the best way to help both the preschool and Shirley’s family. Thank you for your patience and your support.

A note from the President

Welcome October.. what a busy month! Preschool is in full swing and lots of fun activities are planned. I hope to see as many families as possible at the Newark Halloween Parade on the 31st!

I want to thank all of the parents who attended the September Parent Meeting. As you already know if you attended the meeting, the school is operating on a tight budget this year. I was pleased by all of the ideas presented regarding the budget, additional fundraisers, and publicity. Please feel free to contact myself or any Board member with your ideas/suggestions. If we all work together, I know we can make this a great year for the preschool!

Please plan on attending the October Parent Meeting. We will be discussing new plans for snack donations, housekeeping donations, and other important budget measures. We will continue to discuss ideas for fundraising and publicity. Donna Zador (Daniel, 4’s a.m.) is heading up a committee on publicity issues and is looking for volunteers. Please call Donna on 368-7771 if you are interested in helping!

I look forward to seeing everyone on the 19th. In the meantime, do not hesitate to call (733-0114) or e-mail me at (matsanka@hotmail.com).

A note from our Coordinating Parents

The helping parent schedule will be made with as much consideration as possible for all the families. However, if you have been scheduled to be helping parent on a day that is not convenient for you, it is your responsibility to find a replacement by exchanging a day with another parent. Please be sure both helping parents make the change and initial the classroom calendar so the teacher is aware of whom to expect for class.

Thanks for you time with this and we hope to have a smoothly scheduled year!

Helpful Hints

School closing due to weather related conditions will be announced on WNRK, WDEL and WSTW as soon as possible. We will follow the Christina school district school closing. A Telephone tree will be used if NCP is doing something different than Christiana School District. To participate in the phone tree, use the class list. The coordinating parent will call the first name on the class list. That person will coo the next name on the list and so on. If there is no answer, or if you leave a message on the answering machine, call the next name on the list, but continue trying to reach the family you called originally. Be sure all adults in the house know this procedure, If you work make sure the family calling you has your home and work numbers.

· Dress your child according to the weather conditions. We do go outside as much as possible.

· Recycle apple juice bottles, rinse them out and place in the box under the counter in the kitchen.

· Sign up to clean the classroom. Remember cleaning must be done on Friday evening this year. The keys are located on the Helping Parent Bulletin Board.

· New Ark United Church of Christ collects aluminum cans as a fund raiser if you would like details call the church secretary, Lynne at 737-4711.

· The classroom has a camera available at all times. Ask the teachers for the location and feel free to take pictures anytime you are in the classroom. The photos will be placed in the 1999-2000 album. If you take pictures with your personal camera, donate copies to the school so they can be placed in the album.

· The books on the shelves by the cubbies are available for you to sign out. Sign your child’s name and the book titles; return them to the pink basket. Our classroom librarian will check them as returned and restock the shelves.

· Every 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday a ladies bridge club will be using the large hall (by the bathroom). the parking lot may be full at drop off and pick up times. The Church has received permission for us to park at the back of the antique lot. Several parking spots will be marked off with orange safety cones for preschool parking.

Pet Days

Dear Pets and Stuffed Animals,

Please come to school on Pet Day, October 7th or 8th Mom or Dad will bring you to the out outside play area at 11:00 a.m. for the AM class ; 2:30 p.m. for the PM class. If you are a live pet you need to be in an animal travel cage or on a leash. Pets on a leash should stay outside the fence area near the sandbox. Small pets can be placed on the picnic tables. Stuffed animals can be placed on the blanket. My friends and I will come outside to see all the pets and stuffed animals.

Love,

Your Boy or Girl

Upcoming Events/Special Notes

NCP field trip transportation is provided by parents of children in the class. Our insurance prohibits anyone from driving who has a moving traffic violation (not a parking ticket) within the last six months. You should file an insurance information sheet with Fran Jenson (Alex 4’s a.m.) prior to driving. The AM class will be at Ashland from 10:00 - 11:00, so our dismissal time will be at 11:45 a.m. that day.

The Annual Newark Halloween Parade will be Sunday October 24th at 2:00 p.m. This is a fun event for our preschool families and a fun way for our program to be visible in the community. Donna Zador (Daniel 4’s a.m.) will distribute specific information as it becomes available from the City of Newark. Children participating in the parade with our group must be accompanied by an adult. This is an entirely voluntary activity. If you have a wagon to lend so the children can ride, please let us know. Siblings are welcome to join us. This is a family event. Join the fun for a great way to celebrate fall.

Our Halloween parties will be held October 28th and 29th. At Halloween especially, what is fun for one child is scary for another. Therefore, children do not wear or bring costumes to school for the parties. The children will create costumes as part of our party. Each family is asked to donate 3 items which can be used for “dress up”. Hats, scarves, ties, silky fabric shirts, nightgowns, slips, vests, and belts are popular. PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN SHORTS, PANTS, SHOES, OR STORE BOAUGHT COSTUMES OR MASKS. We will encourage non-scary creativity, which will include face or hand painting with washable markers. Feel free to come and take pictures of our “parade around the play area” prior to refreshments. times will be posted on the bulletin board.
